Infertility occurs mostly due to factors such as irregular menstrual cycles, painful sexual intercourse, miscarriage or any chronic disability. Sometimes women feel pain in their vulva leading to burning, stinging or irritation in their genitals which is termed as Vulvodynia. Another gynecological disease frequently prevailing is Endometriosis. It happens usually in the reproductive years of a woman whereby the womb sheds during menstruation and leads to internal bleeding, infection and internal injury.

Some of the common sexually transmitted diseases found among women are Chlamydia, Genital herpes, Gonorrhea, Hepatitis and HIV. Women are entitled to various reproductive rights whereby they have the right to knowledge to sexuality and reproduction, right to go for family planning, opt for programs that reduce women infertility and mortality rate, access to safe, affordable abortion techniques in addition to post and pre marriage counseling. Most prominently they are eligible to stop forced sterilization and get right nutrition during the pregnancy period.

Why Couples Find Difficulty Conceiving: Causes Of Infertility

8:35 PM 0 Comments
The term infertility refers to the abnormal incapacity to produce children by natural means of conception. It also refers to the incapability of a woman to go through the entire course of pregnancy. Several couples throughout the world strive hard to conceive a child, however some find extreme difficulty in doing so and thus need medical assistance to be successful. Around percent of the people in the reproductive age are infertile according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, a third of such cases affect females, another third affects males, and 15 percent affect both partners.

Technically, a couple is considered infertile if they are unable to conceive a child within six months of unprotected sexual intercourse (or 12 months if the woman is over 35 years old), according to the INCIID (International Council on Infertility Information Dissemination). There are many reasons this may happen. Such factors may affect either the male or the female, or both partners.

Causes of Male Infertility

There are several factors that could lead to male infertility. A common cause is the problem with sperm production. An infertile male may be producing very little sperm cells or very weak/immobile sperm cells. A man may also be affected by an underlying disease or medical condition such as endocrine problems, diabetes, Kallmann’s syndrome, hypogonadism, hyperprolactinemia, drug and alcohol-related problems, that hinder the production of hormones necessary for sperm production.

Some men might have problems on their reproductive organs themselves. Among such conditions include Klinefelter’s syndrome, testiscular trauma, mumps, Idiopathic failure, seminoma, varicocele, hydrocele, cryptorchidism, and the like. These conditions have direct effects on the testicles themselves, which are the organs responsible for sperm production.

Some men might be able to produce healthy and plentiful of sperm cells but have problems of releasing them for proper intercourse. They might have an obstruction in the vas deferens (the tube that connects the testicles to the penis), infection, retrograde ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, and hypospadias. This prevents the successful transfer of sperm to the female reproductive system.

Causes of Female Infertility

As a counterpart to the causes of male infertility, females might have problems with the production of healthy egg cells. They might have problems in their ovaries such as polycystic ovary syndrome, luteal dysfunction, diminished ovarian reserve, Turner syndrome, anovulation, ovarian neoplasm and premature menopause, which hinder the healthy maturation and appropriate release of egg cells.

A woman may also be infected by other conditions that affect her reproductive health. Among such conditions include diabetes mellitus, adrenal disease, liver ailments, kidney malfunction, thyroid disorders, and psychological problems.

A woman may also have problems with certain glands that produce necessary hormones for reproductions. Among such diseases include Kallmann syndrome, hypothalamic dysfunction, hypopituaitarism, and hyperprolactinemia.

Some problems may also be affect the cervix, making it difficult for sperm to reach the egg cell. Such problems include anti-sperm antibodies, cervical stenosis, and insufficient secretion of mucus for the travel of sperm.

The uterus or the womb itself might not be conducive for carrying a child. There could be uterine malformations, leiomyoma or uterine fibroids, and Asherman’s Syndrome.

Infertility is a difficult problem. Fortunately, the wonders of medical science has produced several treatments for both male and female infertility. To know more about them, one can simply consult a fertility clinic, a gynecologist or a urologist.

Why Can't Thrush Just Spare The Nipples!

8:32 PM 0 Comments
Have you ever had sore nipples that constantly itch irritatingly? No, please do not ever think of getting the scissors to snip off those nipples! Allegorically, if you really feel like doing this already, read on, you may have nipples with thrush.

Usually, the main culprit in skin itchiness is insect bite. Mosquito bites usually do not last long and could be easily remedied by calamine lotions. If you have innocently treated your nipples like you do with insect bits, chances are you will not get any result. If it is thrush (fungi), it will be quite stubborn because it will last for weeks, and if untreated, it could go for a year.

Fungal infections in the skin can healed by over the counter topical creams applied liberally as indicated by the leaflet of the drug. If the right cream is used constantly and religiously, there is no way a fungi can continue growing in the skin.

In case of the nipple, lactating mothers are prone to it because lactation keeps the nipple moist, and that amount of dampness triggers growth of fungi. This also goes along with the drug treatment the mother is using which can weaken the body from fighting the overgrowth of yeasts all the way. As far as nipples with thrush are concerned, men also acquire them without reason. Yes, fungal infections just come and go, sometimes airborne, but basically, they come naturally and without serious cause.

Thrush is basically internal than external. When all kinds of organisms invade all environments, plant or animal environment, it can never be eradicated at all. In the body, it is beneficial in balancing the processes of the system. They only become harmful when too much, just like any other parasites and bacteria.

The friendliest habitat of yeasts is damp environment. When the nipples are expected to be dry, you may not suspect that too much sweat can leave it prone to fungal infection. The nipples have mammary ducts that are quite different from other part of the skin.

For men, nipples with thrush are not so much an issue as theirs are dormant. For lactating mothers, it could add stress. When breastfeeding is a woman's gift of nurturing, some harbor thrush and some do not. As breastfeeding gets established, the symptoms could be mistaken as blisters caused by sucking, as it is the first obstacle of any first-time nursing processes of feeding an infant. So it goes for several days, only to find out that the period of adjustment never seem to get comfortable.

Then afterwards, nipples with thrush go advance with constant sensations like pain, soreness and itchiness, which could affect the mother's desire to nurse. It must be clear that it is thrush that is causing the problem.

With some patience, fungal infections in the nipples could be treated the same way as the other skin. For breastfeeding mothers, it will mean an additional effort and care to avoid passing it to her baby

Fungal preparations, which come in tubes, are manufactured in almost the same formula. Use only the right fungal cream for thrush and not any other medications for common wounds. If thrush is left untouched but constantly treated, it has faster healing result.

If you are a person who have recurring fungal infections all the time, then it is time for you to think of deeper way to cure yourself by changing diet, avoiding foods rich in sugar. For best result, contact an expert.

What To Expect From A Home Pregnancy Test

8:29 PM 0 Comments
A home pregnancy test is a quick and efficient way of finding out if you’re pregnant. They have a high accuracy rate (about 97%) and are available from most drugstores. If you are unsure how a pregnancy test works, read on!

How does a home test work?

When a woman is pregnant, she starts developing a hormone called HCG. Basically, these tests measure the amount of this hormone in your urine. Home pregnancy tests vary in sensitivity so depending on the one you have purchased, some may detect pregnancy earlier on than others. If you are unsure to this, read the instruction or back of packs and they should be able to tell you how sensitive that particular home test is.

When to take a pregnancy test

There is no one answer as to when to take a pregnancy test. Again, this is dependent on the particular brand of pregnancy test you purchase. Some tests state they are able to detect pregnancy as early as six days after ovulation but the most accurate tests are those that detect pregnancy about 14 days after ovulation. For most women, this falls mid-way through their ovulation cycle. Even if your menstrual cycle is very regular, it is safest to wait at least a week after your period was last due before taking a pregnancy test. This ensures the most accuracy.

How accurate are home pregnancy tests?

Research suggests that pregnancy tests are about 97% accurate. Although false positives can occur, this is very rare. As long as you follow the given instructions, these tests should give you a reliable result. Taking a test before your period is due is not recommended. As aforementioned, for the most reliable results, it is best to take a test after your last period is due. Negative tests which later on turn out to be positive are generally not due to the product being faulty or unreliable, but rather, the test was probably taken too early. Of course the most accurate way to find out whether you’re pregnant is to see a doctor.

Should I take a home pregnancy test?

If your period is late or if you are suffering from possible morning sickness and sore breasts, more than likely you are pregnant. Before taking the next big step in seeing a doctor, taking a home test is a great alternative. If your period is late, this means that you are already post-ovulation and this is the best time to take a test.

Remember that whilst the pregnancy test is very reliable, it is customary to go see a doctor to confirm the results and to wait the 3 month safety period before announcing the news.

What Are The Benefits Of Breastfeeding?

8:26 PM 0 Comments
Parents tend to want to do what is best for their children, including breast feeding their infants. While it can be uncomfortable to do in a public setting, the bond between child and mother grows tremendously when the baby eats from its mother's breast. In addition to strengthening the bond between parent and child, there are many medical benefits associated with breastfeeding. Discover now some of the medical benefits of breastfeeding your baby such as:
  •  protection against gastrointestinal trouble
  •  protection against allergies
  •  increased intelligence in the child
Research studies have found that the first milk your body produces contains immune factors that guard against germs by forming a protective lining on your baby's mucous membranes in the intestines, throat, and nose. This is why it is important for mother to start nursing her child directly after birth.

Breastfeeding your baby helps protect your infant child from gastrointestinal trouble as well as respiratory problems and ear infections. Many research studies have been conducted around the world and have concluded fewer diarrheas, less ear infections, and fewer respiratory illnesses in children who have been breastfed. Women involved in the research studies breastfed their babies exclusively for at least the first six months. This means the baby consumed breast milk only, no solid food.

Many research studies have also found that breastfeeding exclusively for at least six months can reduce the chances of the child developing allergies. At least one research study has proven that this lasts up into the age of adolescence. Breastfed babies are also at less risk of developing asthma up to the average age of 6.

In addition to the above research studies, other studies have been conducted and have found possible links between breastfeeding and the child's IQ. In these research studies, people who had been breastfed at least for the first six months of their lives scored higher on IQ tests. Experts have said that the emotional bonding associated with breastfeeding may be a key factor in this, but that fatty acids in breast milk just may play the larger role in a baby's brain development.

There are many other health benefits associated with breastfeeding your baby. Some of these benefits include:
  •  prevention of obesity in your child later in life
  •  lower your baby's risk of SIDS
  •  prevention of childhood leukemia
While breastfeeding is not always a viable option, when it can be done, it can be beneficial to both mother and child. Not only is the bonding experience incredible, but the health benefits associated with breast feeding are numerous. Whenever the option is viable, a mother should consider breast feeding her child, because it is best for both mother and child.

As the old saying goes….breast fed is best fed!

Understanding Ectopic Pregnancy

8:24 PM 0 Comments
Did you know that...  symptoms of ectopic pregnancy typically include lower back, abdominal, or pelvic pain. The pain usually gets worse before it gets better and more often than not vaginal bleeding will occur.

I am expecting my first child in March. I have to admit that I was very nervous about ectopic pregnancy and I didnot know much about the topic.  After doing some research I felt compelled to share what I learned about ectopic pregnancy with all expecting moms.

The first thing we want to do is understand the differences between a normal pregnancy and an ectopic pregnancy. Understanding these differences will not only educate us on the topic, but it will help put that nervous nelly mind to
rest!

During a normal pregnancy the fertilized egg enters the uterus. The uterine lining gives the fertilized egg plenty of room to divide and grow (and make your belly big).

During a typical ectopic pregnancy, the egg does not actually reach the uterus, but gets hung up in the Fallopian tubes.  As the egg starts to grow this causes the tubes to stretch and get irritated.  Typically you will feel extreme
pain (you know your body and you will know the difference between this pain and expected pain).

Ectopic pregnancy should not go untreated. If it’s left untreated you’re at risk of rupturing the Fallopian tube which would cause internal bleeding.

So what causes ectopic pregnancy you ask?  Is it me or something I did or did not do?  Is it my lack of exercise?  Is it my poor diet or my extremely healthy diet? No, no and more no!

There are a few causes for ectopic pregnancy and I will list them here:
  1.  PID (pelvic inflammatory disease) have a HIGH occurrence of ectopic pregnancy.
  2.  Your Fallopian tubes have cilia (almost like hair)located on the surface that help carry the fertilized egg to the final resting area the uterus.  Some women have damage to this cilia or even blockage of the tubes and this can cause ectopic pregnancy.
  3.  Tubal ligation can cause cilia damage. The problem is that treatment for ectopic pregnancy is to use tubal surgery which increases your risk for future occurrences.
  4.  High levels of estrogen and progesterone. These hormones can slow the egg down as it travels to the uterus. Infertility treatments can cause higher risk of ectopic pregnancies.
Can ectopic pregnancy be treated?  What are my options if I am diagnosed with ectopic pregnancy?

There are basically two types of treatment for ectopic pregnancy. Nonsurgical treatment and surgical treatment. Nonsurgical treatment: Since 1993 the drug methotrexate has proven to help ectopic pregnancy if taken early on in the pregnancy. Methotrexate can interfere with the growth of the developing egg causing the cessation of pregnancy.Surgical treatment: If bleeding has already occurred, surgical intervention is necessary to stop blood loss and reduce the risk of your body going into shock.  Most surgeons use laparoscopy or laparotomy for access to the pelvis and can remedy the
affected Fallopian tube.

Should you worry about ectopic pregnancy?  Of course, what mother would not. Make sure you do not let every ache and pain make you think you’re having one.  Just remember the things I listed.  If you conceived from fertility drugs that does not mean you will have an ectopic pregnancy, but you should monitor and pay close attention to the symptoms. This information is here to educate you and not scare you. Remember to enjoy your pregnancy and good luck with everything.

Top Tips To Ensure Pregnancy Health Both For The Mom And The Baby

8:12 PM 0 Comments
Finally the pregnancy test kit showed that you are positively pregnant! You double-check by going to an ob-gyne and after undergoing a battery of tests the doctor confirmed that you really are pregnant.

Pregnancy can bring so much joy to a family. However, it can also pose innumerable health risks to the woman and to the baby, as well. Pregnancy is oftentimes one of the most awaited events in a woman's life, especially if the woman has had a hard time trying to conceive. This means that when a woman is pregnant taking some precautions for health maintenance is downright required.

Here are some ways that a pregnant woman can employ to ensure the health of her baby and her self, too.

Eat well, conceive well.

It's not true that you have to eat for two when pregnant. Eating more than the amount of food that is enough for one person will only cause the unwanted bloat. According to research, a pregnant woman will only need an extra 200 to 300 calories per day. And who knows, you might be already eating those extra calories. Eating healthy food will do the mother and the young life inside the mother just right. Of course, those extra calories should not come from junk food.

Supplement your wellness.

A pregnant mom should take a vitamin supplement that contains folic acid, better even before conception and during early pregnancy. Why folic acid? Because this micro-mineral, which is found mostly on green leafy vegies, when taken 400 mcg daily before and during early pregnancy, can reduce the risk of having babies born with neural tube defects.

Away with your vices.

It could have been awefully hard for you to quit on your smoking and frequent alcohol intake. Now is high time for you to rethink your actions. The nicotine from cigarettes and alcohol from the alcoholic beverages you consume can harm your growing baby. Usually, babies from mothers that have been smoking are born with low average birth weight, are prone to being born prematurely and may die from sudden infant death syndrome compared to babies of non-smoking moms. Caffeine is one substance that should be avoided, too. So, say ta-ta to your espressos and brewed fraps for your baby's sake.

Precautions schmasions.

Even before pregnancy, it won't hurt to get prenatal care. Making sure that you are immune to certain diseases that might affect your pregnancy counts a lot. An example of these diseases that a pregnant woman should be cautious of is rubella or German measles. Knowing your blood type will also help you prepare for any medical condition that you might encounter during pregnancy.

Exercise properly for you and your baby.

Exercising is one good way to help keep a pregnant woman fit, as well as her baby. However, there are certain conditions that ob-gyne's need to approve before a pregnant woman can do any exercise. One of the important forms of exercise that can be done during pregnancy include those that help improve the muscles' endurance. Stretching can help a lot, too. But all of these activities should be done with ample amount of precaution, of course.

It all boils down to the fact that if a woman would like to have a healthy pregnancy, she has to simply have a healthy lifestyle.

Tips To Shopping For Maternity Clothing

8:08 PM 0 Comments
Whether you are an expectant mom or are shopping for someone who is, maternity clothing is a popular selection to ensure comfort throughout the pregnancy. With cotton being the softest and most breathable fabric, this type of clothing is often quite desirable. In addition, fabric with elastic in the waist and a soft texture will make the mom-to-be comfortable. In addition, the following tips will help you to shop for maternity clothing that will fit your style and budget.

Comfort. The first thing to consider with any clothing, including maternity clothing, is comfort. If an outfit isn’t comfortable, there is no use in wearing it. Quality maternity clothing will be breathable, soft and feature stretch.

Affordability. Just because you are looking for maternity clothing, there’s no reason to empty the bank account in doing so. A quality outfit can be purchased without spending a fortune. In most cases, a nice cotton t-shirt and soft pant with an elastic waist will be perfect. By shopping around and comparing prices, you will find the perfect maternity clothing at the perfect price.

Design. Everyone wants an outfit that looks good, which is why design is very important. An expectant mom often needs to feel especially put together since she will not be wearing the clothes that she is used to wearing. In selecting a color scheme that suits your taste and lifestyle, you will not only feel good in your new maternity clothing, but you will look good too.

Versatility. One of the most important factors of selecting maternity clothing is versatility. This is apparel that you will wear for a number of months, but will not likely wear again. If another pregnancy occurs in the future, most expectant mothers purchase new maternity clothes. Therefore, solid color shirts that will compliment stretch jeans or cotton pant will be ideal.

Layaway. Because it takes a while for new mom’s to show their baby weight, there is time to shop for maternity clothing soon after hearing the good news. If you are short on cash, a layaway will allow you to secure the maternity clothing now and pay for it gradually. Once you are ready to wear it, you can pay the remaining balance and begin to wear your new attire without paying the entire price all at once.

Maternity clothing should be easy care and easy wear, meaning that it is machine wash/dry. The largest selection of maternity clothing, even though also found in local stores, is the internet. A virtual shopping mall of sizes, styles, fabrics and designs are all available with the click of a mouse.

Tips To Help Pregnant Women Reduce Morning Sickness.

8:06 PM 0 Comments
The dreaded 'morning sickness', extreme nausea and vomiting, will affect around 90% of pregnant women. Just why women have to go through this is not known, but there are some things you can do to minimise this unpleasant part of pregnancy.
  1. Ask your medical advisor whether you can take vitamin B6. A dose of approximately 100 mg per day has been shown to reduce the feeling of nausea.
  2. Eat foods rich in the B vitamins: examples are nuts, chicken, fish, liver and advocados.
  3. Take frequent sips of liquids such as water, soup, tea, and lemonade. This can help in two ways: when you vomit you loose a lot of fluids and it is important to keep your body hyderated at all times; and it also makes vomiting less unpleasant if you have something to bring up. Vomiting when the stomach is empty is even more unpleasant than when you have something to bring up.
  4. Avoid foods with strong smells such as spicy or fried foods as such dishes can make you feel queasy and induce vomiting.
  5. Snack little and often. When you go to bed place biscuits or muffins at your bedside and nibble these if you wake in the night.
  6. Foods high in carbohydrates are more likely to stay down and will ward off hunger. Recommended foods are breads, rice and pasta.
  7. If you don't feel like eating, don't. If eating will make you feel queasy and cause you to vomit, there is no point. You will not benefit nutritionly if the food comes straight back up.
Morning sickness is the least enjoyable part of being pregnant. How long it lasts varies from women to women. Just keep reminding yourself that it will end.

Around 90% of pregnant women will be affected by 'morning sickness' - extreme nausea and vomiting. Here are some tips on how to reduce this unpleasant experience.

Tips For Discreet Breastfeeding In Public

7:57 PM 0 Comments
If you're a new Mom who is nursing your baby you may be nervous about doing so in public.

Or perhaps you are disturbed by media reports of women who are harassed for breastfeeding in public and are considering pumping your milk to give your baby when you leave home.

Here are some tips for discreet breastfeeding that have worked for many Moms. Hopefully they will help you feel more comfortable nursing in public so you can avoid the inconvenience of pumping and preparing bottles.

1) Before you have your baby, attend a La Leche League or other breastfeeding support group meeting.

Unfortunately in our Society that gives lip service to the benefits of breastfeeding, it is still rare to see Moms nursing in public, and so most of us grow up having our own babies never having seen another woman nurse.

Going to an LLL meeting and seeing how other Moms nurse their babies discreetly and confidently can boost your own confidence. They can also share with you tips that will make nursing in public easier for you.

2) Invest in a baby sling.

These are wonderful for making life with a baby easier all around, but one thing they're great for is discreet breastfeeding. I can't count the times someone approached me in a store and commented on my baby having no idea that s/he was latched on and nursing! The fabric of the sling can be adjusted to come up over the baby's head (yet most babies don't mind this like they do a blanket), or you can use the extra fabric on the "tail" to cover baby.

3) After your baby is born, practice nursing in front of a mirror or a friend to perfect your technique.

Once you and baby are getting to be old pros at the latch on, you can most likely do so in just a couple of seconds.

4) Nurse at the first signs of hunger.

A nursing baby generally draws less attention than a screaming one! So latch your baby on as soon as you notice that s/he is hungry...rooting, sucking on fist, grimacing face, etc. A crying baby also makes you nervous and you and baby may take longer to get latched on comfortably.

5) Try turning your body away while you latch on.
If you're sitting at a table in a restaurant, simply turn your body away from the table briefly while you latch baby on, then resume your normal position.

6) Try nursing clothes.

These are designed to cover your belly for more discreet breastfeeding. Or simply wear a thin top under a cardigan or other shirt. You can also make your own nursing top by cutting slits in a tank and wearing it under another shirt.

7) Bring a book or large purse to set in your lap to camouflage.

Your diaper bag would also work. Set it in front of baby on your knees while you latch baby on. Or hold a book so that your baby's head and your breast are out of view.

     And lastly...

8) Be confident!

You are doing something that is best for you and baby and that women all over the world for thousands of years have done. Be proud of yourself and give passersby a warm smile. You'd be surprised how often people will smile back or even approach with a commendation or anecdote about their own children.

     Enjoy nursing your baby!

Things You Should Know About A Molar Pregnancy

7:54 PM 0 Comments
Pregnancy is an exciting time for any woman, but with the many pregnancy complications out there, it can also be scary for first time mothers. It has been reported that one in every thousand pregnancies in the U.S. is a molar pregnancy, which makes it one of the most common pregnancy complications for women today.

What is a molar pregnancy?
This occurs when a sperm fertilizes an empty egg. Even though it’s empty, it continues to develop and a placenta is formed despite there being no fetus. The hormone HCG is also produced which fools the body into thinking that there is a pregnancy when there is only placenta.

A partial molar pregnancy occurs when two sperms fertilize an egg. However, instead of forming twins, in this type of pregnancy, something goes wrong and an abnormal fetus and placenta is developed instead. As there is double the sperm, the fetus receives too many chromosomes and instead may die in the womb.

Molar pregnancy symptoms
One of the first molar pregnancy signs you may notice is spotting which could lead to heavier bleeding. Depending on the severity of the case, the bleeding may start as early as 6 weeks into the pregnancy or as late as 12. Another common sign of this type of pregnancy is nausea, abdominal cramping and swelling. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms and feel as though your pregnancy may be molar, don’t hesitate to consult your doctor.

Molar pregnancy treatments
A D&C (dilatation and curettage) will be used for treatment. This is a safe procedure in which a small vacuum is inserted into the uterus to remove the placental parts. However, great care must still be taken as not to provoke any excessive bleeding or blood clots. This type of pregnancy can recur as some women may just be prone to them. If this is the case and after your first such pregnancy, you have another, consult your doctor about special treatments to prevent this from happening again.

Molar pregnancies are a tragic way to lose a child, but having one does not mean you are never going to have another baby again. Make sure you are aware of molar pregnancy symptoms and regularly go to the doctor for consultations.

The Process Of Natural Childbirth

7:52 PM 0 Comments
Natural childbirth is defined as a birth that attempts to minimize the intervention of modern medicine, including the use of medications and/or surgical procedures. Experts who believe that natural childbirth is beneficial to both the mother and child feel that anaesthetics may increase the possibility of complications during birth due to the fact that the woman may not be capable of pushing properly during the final stages of delivery.

Natural childbirth often promotes a healthier delivery overall because it eliminates the risks associated with caesarean sections and possible side effects from certain medications. Lamaze is a technique that is designed to help women who choose to deliver via natural childbirth and provides direction in breathing and relaxation. Regular classes are given at local hospitals or clinics by a qualified individual. The father of the child is usually present for each class in order to provide support for the mother. In most cases, the father of the child will also be in the delivery room, which is why it is so important that he also be present to help learn how to coach the mother on breathing and relaxation exercises.

Not all physicians believe that natural childbirth is a positive experience, noting the pain involved as being difficult for the mother. Others believe that it is beneficial as the process of natural childbirth leaves the new mother feeling empowered and also allows her to be alert as the child is brought into the world and placed in her arms.

Depending on the expectant mother’s overall health, certain medical intervention may often be required in order to ensure a successful and safe childbirth. Whether or not a natural childbirth is an option will be assessed by the physician and the expectant mother. Unless it is a matter of life and death or extreme concern as to the health of the mother or child, the choice will ultimately be left up to the mother as she will have the final say in the delivery method. It is advisable, however, that women listen to their physician and carefully consider his/her recommendations.

This article is to be used for informational purposes only and is not intended to be used as professional medical advice. The information contained herein should not be used in place of, or in conjunction with, a doctor’s recommendation . Prior to deciding either for or against natural childbirth, the expectant mother must consult a licensed physician for proper diagnosis and a recommendation.

The Pink Kit Method for birthing better™ goes well with chiropractic care.

7:50 PM 0 Comments
Common Knowledge Trust approached Jeanne Ohm, Executive Coordinator of ICPA to write some articles about The Pink Kit Method for birthing better™ for ICPA. When asked what aspects of childbirth, ICPA has concerns about, Jeanne wrote back ‘We are concerned about all aspects of birth—1) a woman's right to choose 2) the importance of her being aware of her options 3) the physiological relationship of pelvis and birth’.

For Common Knowledge Trust the goals are slightly different, yet heading toward the same alignment … more positive births and a decrease in birth trauma for us, the mother and our children. CKT’s goals would sound like this 1) Absolutely all of us, as expectant parents, must have both labour management and coaching skills 2) These skills must work for us in absolutely all birth situations. 3) We all share the same human body which we can prepare and develop skills for this unique exercise … childbirth with The Pink Kit Method for birthing better™.

CKT is the collective voice of thousands upon thousands of us … women and men. This does not mean that thousands of us gathered at a conference to nut out how to prepare for childbirth or what skills we could use that suited all births. CKT reflects the stories, the questions, solutions, ideas and musings that we tell each other about our own experiences of childbirth. We remember giving birth and anyone who is with us remembers the experience as well. Childbirth is BIG and remembered.

At the same time, childbirth has been removed from us in several ways over several generations.

Modern families have left behind their diverse cultural knowledge, ‘know-how’, and family support during pregnancy, childbirth and after birth. Although statistics clearly show that we are more likely to die or be injured at any other time in our lives, pregnancy and birth has been embraced by a modern health system including midwives and doctors for several generations. Modern childbirth preparation is entirely different from childbirth preparation in our diverse cultural backgrounds. Labour and coaching skills have not been highly developed in modern societies.

Childbirth in traditional communities varies significantly as to where or with whom a woman gives birth, just as in modern communities. For example, there are cultures where women go alone to birth or are excluded away from their village for months. Cultures vary as to who is present. In some cultures birth is exclusively ‘women’s business’ while in others the whole family is involved and fathers take an active part. Although many cultures have individual people who attend births, this is not a profession. The number of children born into most communities is relatively small, so attending births occurred periodically.

In most cultures, women birthed with relatives rather than a specific ‘birth attendant.’ If a problem occurred a healer or spiritual guide would come. Some cultures had no concept of birth attendant, whoever was there at the time helped. In some cultures, the birth specialist were men, while in other they were women. Although special birth attendants were highly regarded, in some communities they were the unclean because they could touch human waste. Because of all this diversity, no wonder modern birth is confusing about where, with whom and how women should birth.

Layered over all of our histories is the development of modern maternity care and its use for the past 3-4 generations. Complete the complexity around childbirth by adding ‘choice’, ‘informed consent’, defining what are medical childbirth interventions and natural childbirth, whether an obstetrician, midwife (CNM or direct entry) is the best care provider or whether home, hospital or birth centre is the best place to birth. So many issues, yet as you read this millions of women are giving birth around the world … one contraction at a time.

Common Knowledge Trust grew by shear accident. A woman who had broken her tail bone at the birth of her child 10 years earlier compared her tail bone to the founder of Common Knowledge Trust. One had a long tail bone, the other didn’t. Several insights occurred from this simple exchange of body knowledge.

Some women had long tails and others didn’t.
The woman with the long tail bone had hers damaged in childbirth whereas the other woman hadn’t.
Two women from very, very different backgrounds had something in common …tail bones and their birthing body.

Bingo! We could develop body knowledge that any woman could benefit from by knowing about her own birthing body. That one insight led to ways to get the tail bone out of the way in childbirth. Other childbirth stories and physical complaints among pregnant women led to more discoveries about our amazing birthing body. The Pink Kit Method for birthing better™ started to evolve. This occurred in the early 1970s. In 2005, The Pink Kit Method resources are now available to you.

The insights along the way have been many, yet occurred over time.

Telling our birth stories were the source of knowledge and important. They were told on several levels.
We spoke about what time we went into labour, when our waters broke, when we got fully dilated and what time we delivered.
We spoke about what ‘they’ did to us … both what we liked and mostly what we didn’t like.
Our own perception of the experience. ‘My back hurt all the time.’ ‘It didn’t hurt as much as I imagined’, ‘It was worse than I could have imagined’. etc
Men had the same body, so they could feel the same things in their body which helped them coach us better.
All women had the same body with minor differences. Those differences were very important and helped us focus our own preparation and labour management.
All women laboured the same way … one contraction after another until our baby came out of the same hole.
We exhibited behaviours in labour that indicated whether we were coping or not.
All birth professionals admired women who managed their labours well and loved to see couples work together.
When women, birthing in hospitals, birth centres and at home, managed labour well, the birth professionals were more relaxed.
Women with health issues still wanted to manage their labours and have positive birth experiences, as did women who chose hospital and doctor care.
Women planning or requiring a non-labouring delivery still wanted to feel part of the process.

If we stuck to the body, passed on practical, real, effective and easy to use labour management and coaching skills, people were willing to learn them regardless of the diversity in ethnic background, religion, beliefs, health issues, choices, education or other. The skills worked in absolutely all birth situations.

The evolution of The Pink Kit grew from the stories that we told about our physical experience of birth (the other issues such as what ‘they’ did or didn’t do are not the scope of CKT) and what each of us could do to:
  •      Manage our labours better.
  •      Have our partner, husband, friend or relative be a very good labour coach.
  •      Resolve the ‘too intense’ sensations of labour.
  •      Know what we were doing rather than being carried by the experience.
  •      Prevent or lessen physical and emotional birth trauma.
  •      Increase a positive birth experience in and around all the medical assessments, monitoring and procedures.
There were many other people and organisations working on broader issues that have changed maternity care: women’s options, birth plans and choices. There were many people working on the changes that focused on diversifying birth professionals, while others focused on creating birth place options.

From the Stories, The Pink Kit Method for birthing better™ evolved. Common Knowledge Trust became the charitable organisation under which The Pink Kit Method developed the resources now available. We remained focused entirely on preparing our own birthing body, the birthing skills that reflect a woman’s positive childbirth management and coaching skills for our partners/husbands so that they can help us when we are finding the sensations of childbirth challenging.

Summary:
Common Knowledge Trust approached Jeanne Ohm, Executive Coordinator of ICPA to write some articles about The Pink Kit Method for birthing better™ for ICPA. When asked what aspects of childbirth, ICPA has concerns about, Jeanne wrote back ‘We are concerned about all aspects of birth—1) a woman's right to choose 2) the importance of her being aware of her options 3) the physiological relationship of pelvis and birth’.

The Pink Kit Method - a comprehensive, new and unique approach to childbirth preparation, labour management and coaching skills for expectant parents

7:46 PM 0 Comments
There are 4 foundations to The Pink Kit Method for birthing body™. The 1st foundation has been put into the multi-media resource called The Pink Kit: Essential Preparations for your birthing body. In the video and interactive book, expectant parents will learn the body knowledge that makes such common sense you’ll wonder why you haven’t known it before. We can map our pelvis and know our own shape. That shape helps us find positions that keep us open rather than assume that certain positions are better than others. We can create inner relaxation with the pelvic clock and create more space for our baby with the hip lift, sacral manoeuvre and sit bone spread. We can use a type of directed breathing that we can use to focus our attention, expand or relax specific areas of our body.

Childbirth is a simple plumbing exercise. An object has to come through and out of a container. To do that it must pass through a tube (pelvis), open a diaphragm (cervix) and aperture (vagina). The object likes space, room and not to have its passage bent.

In the multi-media kit is located the 2nd foundation of The Pink Kit Method on an audio tape called The Internal Work. This is the vital internal work or how to prepare your birth canal … the aperture. The plumbing concept of birth seems easy yet some things get in the way. We are the container. We bring to childbirth our structure, our ability to relax or tense up and accept the process of childbirth which can be very painful or fight against it. The goal of The Pink Kit Method is for each of us to create mobility and flexibility in our structure and learn to relax even when the sensations are very painful. Fortunately we can use our incredible human mind and make choices about our behaviours when we have the skills based on our preparation. We can only make realistic choices in our behaviours when we have the knowledge. The Pink Kit is the knowledge. Preparing our birth canal:
  •     Creates a soft aperture for our baby to come through.
  •     Teaches us to respond to the sensations in 2nd stage rather than react. (Feeling we will have a bowel motion, the stinging sensations of the stretching can cause women to pull back from the down urge.)
  •     Prevents trauma to the soft tissue of our vagina.
An adjunctive resource was developed to step you through The Pink Kit video called Companion Guide. Although the sections in the video are easy to follow, many people wanted written instructions as well. This resource also introduces 3 new exercises: Kate’s Cat, Thai Massage, Letting Down Reflex along with two new concepts: Common language which develops good communication with your partner/husband and the concept that there are defined skills for the Birth and Coach Role. These concepts are expanded in the 4th foundation New Focus: Breath, Language and Touch.

Primarily the stories we told about childbirth were about the physical experience we had. We spoke about pain, or lack of it. We had back labours, failure to dilate, babies that stayed high in the pelvis, vaginas that tore, were cut or didn’t open easily or ones that opened in one contraction. We had quick, very intense births and painless ones. We had long, lingering labours that didn’t seem to get started and when they did we were dog tired. Story after story told of us that birth is primarily a physical experience. Some of those experiences were absolutely wonderful. Many women do just ‘get labour’. Realistically, many women don’t get labour. The use of medical pain relief is an attempt to prevent women from suffering too much pain in the process of childbirth. If women were really ‘getting labour’ they won’t be using pain relief.

In our stories, we spoke about residual pain or lack of it. Residual pain often lasted for months or years and often laid a foundation to an unsettled early parenting period. We couldn’t sit down, move our bowels, had burning when we urinated, pain on sex, vaginal wind, infections from tears or incisions, along with pain in our pubic bone or tail bone. Some women breezed through labour and the recovery. The Pink Kit Method just makes it possible for more women to do that. Maybe we won’t all breeze through it, but we’ll work better with the process in a conscious manner with the skills we’ve taught ourselves through our preparation.  The first two foundations of The Pink Kit Method deal with some of these physical issues because we are now able to create a mobile birthing body and learn how to relax inside and prepare our birth canal.

The 3rd foundation of The Pink Kit Method is the Managing Skills. We all acknowledge that childbirth is a huge event in our lives and our children. We also know that most of us have never been to a birth and don’t have a clue what happens much less what to do, how to act or behave. The Managing Skills give us more subjective yet vitally important skills. Do you know that women who niggle for several days are more likely to get tired before progressive labour establishes if they don’t have good coping skills? We can prevent that by asking a simple question ‘What do you want to do now?’ and learning how to calm our mind and understand this early, kind phase of childibirth. Are you aware that while in labour it’s vitally important to stay in the NOW and apply good management skills at each and every moment throughout your labour? We don’t have to wait until the pain of labour is threatening our self control. Instead we can stay on top of the sensations when we apply our skills. Can you imagine working with your husband, partner, relative or friend really well? We can learn to form a good team between ourselves and the person or people who are their to support us.

Childbirth is a whole picture, not just another contraction. We can learn these subjective skills that work to integrate our Pink Kit preparation into our own experience. Of course, there’s a section on when to use The Pink Kit skills you’ve taught yourself. Our stories also told of our own self management experience in and around what was happening to us or around us. In other words, there were as many women who felt good about how they had managed labour in hospital with all the assessments, monitoring and procedure and health issues as there were women who didn’t feel good about how they had managed their labour even though they had accomplished a home birth.

Because our stories are so varied, the goal of The Pink Kit Method has always been passing on the labour management skills that work well in absolutely all birth situations so that each of us can come away from our birth feeling positive about our self management and how well our husband/partner coached us. Childbirth is too full of variables or the unexpected to know what it will be like; however, we can have skills to work through the process as it unfolds. We can have skills that are adaptable and transportable into any birth situation. No woman should deprive herself of positive labour management skills regardless of her choices or the necessity in regards to maternity care or management. In other words, Common Knowledge Trust bypasses the ‘either versus or’ approach to childbirth that has become familiar to so many of us. EITHER we will birth in hospital with a doctor and have a medical birth OR we will birth at home with a midwife and have a natural birth.

As we self managed labour, most of us felt that we had a natural birth even when there was a great deal of medical care. We felt that way because we felt good about how we had coped, managed and responded to our own internal process of dilating and giving birth. Many birth professionals admired our management and loved that our husbands/partners were such good coaches. They wished more couples could have such an experience. They often felt we had had ‘lucky’ or ‘easy’ births because they so strongly felt that childbirth is so unknown there is nothing we can do to prepare for birth.  We knew we had prepared for birth and then used our good management and coaching skills to work through the unknown journey as it evolved. We had conscious births.

We not only explored our own management of labour, we also looked at the three most primal behaviours that accompanied childbirth. They are so much part of Life that we hardly notice them. However, the unique qualities of childbirth require unique applications of these ordinary human behaviours.

The 4th foundation of The Pink Kit Method is New Focus: Breath, Language and Touch. We will all breathe in labour, communicate with our husband/partner and be physically touched (or not). These are human behaviours that all of us share. Within these three shared behaviours there are positive ways we can use them in labour. In the 1970s when fathers came to help us, childbirth education classes focused on breathing and relaxation techniques. As birth discussions focused more on ‘choice’ (birth plans) and ‘information’ (informed consent), the skills were less stressed. In fact, a new belief around childbirth grew. This belief told women that they breathed all the time and would breathe in labour so there was nothing they needed to know. Natural birth has incorporated many beliefs that have actually acted to deskill women. It’s almost as though it’s become admirable to believe the ideal birth is ‘intuitive’ and ‘instinctive’ and requires little knowledge which might interfere with the process. The stories that created The Pink Kit Method approaches clearly show us that when we have positive birth skills, we respond to the process of childbirth with a consciousness unparalleled.

Unlike our traditional counterparts who are surrounded by people closest to us who will help us each step of the way through childbirth, we are often left alone either in hospital (checked periodically) or a home by midwives who are giving us the space to discover our own process. Either way, we can take our amazing childbirth and coaching skills with us. When we do this, our births become a conscious highlight in our lives. Through our self learned skills we brought attunement to the birth of our children.

New Focus: BLT is split into the Birth and Coach role. We have different jobs do to in labour and giving birth yet we can use the same knowledge to do those jobs well. When we work together in labour, we develop close bonds with our husband, partner, friends or relatives. It’s far better to bond with those close to us than our birth provider no matter how wonderful.  As a labouring woman, we are required to look within ourselves. When we coach our partner, we are looking at how she is responding to the process from within herself. When we both use The Pink Kit Method, then we stay on the same track.

In the Breath section, we learn that there are only 4 ways humans breathe. Two are positive breath behaviours in childbirth and two indicate that a woman isn’t coping well with the sensations. From the birth role, we can learn how to use breath as a focus, expand areas or relax specific areas of our body. From the coach role, we can learn how to hear whether a woman is managing the sensations, how to model good breathing behaviour to help her stay on track and how to help her expand and relax specific areas.

In the Language section, we can learn the specific language that really helps women to relax. We often use general language such as ‘relax’ when we see tension in a labouring woman. She is most likely to turn to you and snarl. ‘you try’, ‘I’m trying’ or ‘shut up’. Instead we can specifically tell her to ‘soften in your lower back’. This gives her the place and action and she’ll to do it. She’s momentarily forgotten or not observed that specific tension because the sensations at the moment are BIG. In this section we can learn that verbal messages take a wee bit of time to go in the ear, through the brain, to the body and back to the brain. So you learn about the importance of pausing.

Language or communication can be non-verbal as well. In labour the ability to give each other cues to convey information is important. Particularly in the rigorous part of labour, women short form communication.

In the Touch section of New Focus you learn the type of touch that produces deep internal relaxation. This form of deep, rising touch allows all the connective tissue (fascia) to relax. Most people don’t realize the importance of fascia and how much tense can be stored there. Most people think of tension being caused by muscles. Try this so you can understand the difference between muscles (which is part of soft tissue or connective tissue) and fascia (which is also part of soft/connective tissue and what we need to relax in labour along with specific muscles).

Sit or stand and look straight ahead. Relax your head, neck and shoulders yet still keep your head facing forward. Put your index finger on your forehead about an inch above the outer edge of your eyebrow. Remember keep your head facing forward no matter what. Start to apply pressure to turn your head and continue to increase that pressure. Hopefully, you’ll notice that it takes very little effort to keep your head facing forward even when you apply a great deal of pressure to turn your head.

In labour, that simple fixed or frozen soft tissue (inside of the container) can stop mobility, openness and space. Babies need space to move through you. Couple that fixed or frozen fascia with tensing up your muscles, then you can imagine why the object might have a struggle to get out of the container. Go back to your exercise above and add muscle tension. Our coach can see muscle tension but not see connective tissue tension. Both the Birth and Coach role need to work to reduce that tension, particularly when it’s inside.

When we combine all these Pink Kit skills, this common sense and self knowledge we gain then we can approach childbirth with confidence in our ability to move through the process of giving birth. We don’t have to like one moment of it. Often our own greatest personal achievements are the accomplishments we have during challenging experiences.

Summary:
There are 4 foundations to The Pink Kit Method for birthing body™. The 1st foundation has been put into the multi-media resource called The Pink Kit: Essential Preparations for your birthing body. In the video and interactive book, expectant parents will learn the body knowledge that makes such common sense you’ll wonder why you haven’t known it before. The Perfect Baby Shower Invitation

7:41 PM 0 Comments
Few events in life are as significant and as special as the birth of a new baby. New babies are added to families each day in every country of the world. There are a wide variety of ways that the anticipation of a new baby is celebrated. One of the most popular ways that new life is celebrated in the U.S. is by throwing a baby shower. Typically involving the mother of the baby and female friends and family members, a baby shower is a time to anticipate the new life that is about to be born. Long before the baby shower happens the baby shower invitations are decided upon and sent out.

Receiving a baby shower invitation is something that most women look forward to. Sometimes, receiving a baby shower invitation is the first announcement a woman receives that her friend or family member is pregnant with a new baby. There are few things that women get as excited about as the birth of a baby. Women love receiving a baby shower invitation because it allows them to be a part of one of the greatest celebrations of all.

A baby shower invitation invites women to do what they love to do most: talk about, think about, and shop for new babies. Knowing this, it is important to take your time in selecting the perfect baby shower invitations anytime you are in charge of planning a special baby shower.

We all know that first impressions are important. A baby shower invitation is the first impression that a woman gets about the baby shower that is being planned. Women can tell a lot about a baby shower by the kind of baby shower invitation that they receive. Be careful to choose the right baby shower invitations for your event. Think carefully about the mother of the baby, the gender of the baby if it is known, and the theme and style of the baby shower you are throwing. The baby shower invitations should reflect each of these elements. How strange it would be to receive a pink and purple striped baby shower invitation to a shower anticipating the birth of twin boys?

Search for the perfect baby shower invitation online or at a local paper supply store. Pay attention to details of color, pattern, and texture of the invitation. Choose a baby shower invitation that is unique and well suited for the mom to be. And have fun! Sending the perfect baby shower invitation is the first step among many in celebrating one of life's best
things.

The Benefits Of Pregnancy Massage

7:40 PM 0 Comments
Whilst pregnancy is a time for a mother to really bond with the child she is carrying, it can also cause all sorts of physical aches and pains. As your pregnancy progresses and your stomach enlarges, the backaches and joint sores will only get worse. Having a massage can greatly alleviate these pains and is something all pregnant mothers should consider.

What is a pregnancy massage?

Having a massage during pregnancy differs from a normal massage as the masseuse performing the massage will need to have special knowledge of the body. Pregnant mothers are very sensitive and masseurs will need to be careful when giving massages as to not harm the baby in any way. The positioning of the mother and the intensity of the massage is very important.

Relieve stress

Pregnancy can be a time of stress. You are constantly worrying about the act of giving birth, your body, your child’s health, being a parent, etc. The last thing you need to deal with is a sore back. Going for a massage during pregnancy will help you get your mind off things and de-stress. If you are still early on in your pregnancy, you may want to go visit a spa with your girlfriends. For those who are over four or five months pregnant, you will have to enlist the aid of a professional pregnancy and postpartum masseuse. These professionals are well trained and should be qualified to perform massages for expectant mothers.

Muscle relief

During some point in your pregnancy, you will experience a large amount of muscular cramping, tightening, stiffness, tension and knots. A massage will alleviate these discomforts and will help with backaches, headaches or swollen feet or legs by increasing the blood circulation. This is beneficial not only to the mother but to the fetus, as well as leaving you refreshed and more energized. Massage will also help with muscle flexibility, which is crucial when giving birth and will also prove to be beneficial during the last trimester.

Pregnancy masseurs recommend that pregnant mothers have a pregnancy massage at least once a month. This is to keep them revitalized and ready for the actual birth. No matter how far along you are, a massage during pregnancy is sure to keep you and your baby healthy and happy.

  2. Urinating More Often? Frequent urination is one of the early signs of pregnancy. Many women experience more frequent urination about 7-12 days after the temperature rise at ovulation.
  3. Elevated Body Temperature? A slight increase in body temperature at ovulation is normal. Your basal body temperature staying elevated after ovulation is completed and remaining elevated for the next two weeks can be one of the early signs of pregnancy.
  4. Missing a Menstrual Period? A missed period is one of the obvious pregnancy signs when you take an online pregnancy test. However, you can miss periods for other reasons such as illness, stress and reactions to foods or medications.
  5. Tiredness? A lack of energy as a pregnancy sign may be hard to distinguish from other kinds of exhaustion. Feeling tired is related to the change in hormones in the body, which usually disappears as the body adjusts to new hormone levels during pregnancy.
  6. Feelings of Nausea? Feeling nauseated can happen any time, day or night, although 'morning sickness' is the name given to feeling nauseated when pregnant. Only about half of pregnant women will experience nausea.
  7. Tender Nipples and Breasts? When you take an online pregnancy test, answering yes to this question can indicate pregnancy. These feelings of tenderness go away as the body becomes accustomed to new hormone levels.
  8. Darker Areolas? If the area around the nipples becomes darker, this can be a pregnancy indicator. It can happen as early as one week after conception. The bumps on the areolas may also look more prominent.
If you are answering 'Yes' to one or more of the questions above as you take an online pregnancy test, you should confirm pregnancy by using one of the better home pregnancy tests. There are major differences in the reliability of the home tests for pregnancy. A blood pregnancy test can be accurate as early as 8 to 10 days after conception, and a urine pregnancy test can be accurate as early as 10 to 14 days following conception. If you feel you are pregnant but your pregnancy test result is negative, do the test again in a week or so and see your physician.

Smoking During Pregnancy. Let your child have the choice.

7:34 PM 0 Comments
The word 'Mother' is synonymous with care, love and all good things on the earth. However, smoking mothers can be inadvertently killing and maiming their children – born and unborn. Shocked? It's true. Smoking mothers are potentially gifting their children with lung cancer and many other similarly devastating diseases through second hand smoke. Pregnant women harm their unborn babies directly in the womb.

Besides the above horrifying facts, here are more unsettling reasons to bear in mind when smoking. It will not only interfere with your health, it will also interfere with the health of your unborn child:
  1.  First of all, smoking makes it hard to conceive. Reports show that fertility in both men and women are heavily affected by smoking. In women, smoking interferes with the egg movement toward the fallopian tubes as well as the hormones that are produced during pregnancy; while in men, it lowers the semen count, and the motility of the sperm. In many cases smoking also affects the shape of the sperm making it incapable of penetrating the egg.
  2.  Children born of smoking parents potentially inherit a low fertility syndrome and suffer from a great number of infertility problems.
  3.  Smoking in many cases is the main cause for impotency in men as it interferes with the blood supply to the penis.
  4.  The baby in the womb of a pregnant smoking woman gets its nicotine addiction right from pre-birth as its blood imbibes the nicotine that the mother’s blood shares with it; hence it is more likely that when born they would become a smoker – and also contract all smoking related diseases.
  5.  In rare cases the placenta is directly affected by smoking causing a miscarriage of the foetus, or death in the womb.
  6.  Babies of smoking mothers will be most likely to be born premature and under weight.
  7.  Babies are also likely to have less developed vital organs than their counterparts (babies of non-smoking mothers) – there is a great likelihood that these babies have an undeveloped liver which will affect them throughout their lives.
  8.  The babies of pregnant smoking women have poor lung functions right from birth.
  9.  These babies are twice as prone to die from sudden-infant-death (SID) syndrome than the babies of non-smoking women.
  10.  The babies of those women who smoked 15-20 cigarettes a day are more likely to be sickly.
Any one of the above causes should be sufficient enough to make you quit smoking – if not for yourself, for your little miracle that is being formed in your womb. Read the above lines again, and then once more – is that what you want to give to your most precious creation? Would you really be comfortable thinking that you are voluntarily and consistently harming your child even before their born? These are some questions that you should to ponder seriously.

Get in touch with your doctor today and enlist his/her help to quitting smoking. You owe it to your child to be healthy and give them a healthy beginning to the start of their life. As a mother, you are the nurturing contact of the child – do not become the poison in your own child’s life.

Pregnancy Exercise And Diet Tips - Sensible Advice For Expectant Mothers

7:28 PM 0 Comments
Mothers-to-be have many questions about pregnancy nutrition and exercise. The tips and advice below will help you get started on a healthy pregnancy.

A diet containing the essential nutrients and vitamins are vital to the development of both mother and child. Vitamins are imperative to the health of a developing baby and the well being of the mother. Choosing foods that are rich in vitamins and other nutrients are a critical part of a healthy pregnancy nutrition plan and supplemental vitamins are necessary as well.

Follow a well-planned pregnancy diet to help avoid complications such as morning sickness, fatigue, anemia, and constipation. Your healthy diet must continue after pregnancy if you plan to breastfeed your baby.

Pregnancy food recommendations
  •  Your pregnancy diet should include plenty of complex and unrefined carbohydrates as they contain important B vitamins, trace minerals, and fiber that are essential to a fit, healthy pregnancy.
  •  Appropriate quantities of yellow and green leafy vegetables are vital for the growth of the baby and the health of the mother.
  •  Dairy products contain calcium that will assist in the developing baby's teeth and bones. If your diet is lacking calcium your body will draw calcium from your bones to meet it's increased need.
  •  Avoid excessive amounts of fat must be avoided during pregnancy, as it will only serve to add excess pounds, which will be hard to lose after the birth of your baby.
  •  Vitamin C in generous amounts is crucial to a healthy pregnancy, bone growth, and various metabolic processes. Including berries, citrus fruits, raw broccoli and cabbage can help provide you with the Vitamin C that you need.

Ideally, your pregnancy diet should include 3-4 servings of protein and meat, 2-4 servings of fruit, 6-11 servings of grains, 4-6 servings of dairy products, and 6-8 glasses of water, milk, and juice. A pregnant mother must follow a healthy diet that will benefit the developing baby but that will also maintain her general health as well.

     Exercise recommendations during pregnancy

Exercise during pregnancy will promote strength, muscle tone, and endurance. Regular activity during your pregnancy will help alleviate swelling, fatigue, and backache. If you expect to remain fit during your pregnancy you will need to work your heart and major muscle groups. The type of exercise you do during your pregnancy will depend on your fitness level prior to pregnancy. Walking, pregnancy yoga videos, and swimming are excellent pregnancy exercises combined with stretching and other low-impact activities.

Exercises that involve a risk of falling or injury should be avoided such as bicycling, racket sports, horseback riding, and skiing. You will need to alter your exercise routine from trimester to trimester to accommodate your growing body. Avoiding over-exertion is necessary to avoid complications such as faintness, dizziness, vaginal bleeding, and premature contractions. Also, make sure you drink plenty of water before, during, and after exercising to reduce the risk of dehydration, which can raise your body temperature and cause harm to yourself and/or your baby.

A regular exercise program is beneficial to both mother and child, but check with your health care provider to make sure you have no conditions or risks that will prevent you from participating in a regular exercise routine or could cause potential harm to yourself or your child.

Pregnancy and the Parvo Virus B19

7:25 PM 0 Comments
The Human Parvo Virus B19 is present in almost every place.  One of the diseases it produces is called the 'Fifth disease", a common infection experienced during childhood or adolescence.  Thus, the National Center for Infectious Diseases has estimated that approximately 50% of all adults have experienced the fifth disease.  After recovering from the disease, a person will most likely have developed immunity against further attacks of the B19 parvovirus.

A woman who is pregnant can be attacked by the B19 parvovirus.  This occurrence is usually not life-threatening since many pregnant women are already immune to the virus.  This immunity will also protect the unborn child.  But sometimes, the pregnant woman will be easily fatigued and have mucous discharges from her nose.  Aside from this, there are no serious human parvo virus symptoms that could endanger the lives of both mother and child.  The B19 was never linked to mental retardation or any birth defects.

But there are a few cases of pregnant women who, after being infected by the B19 parvovirus, suffered miscarriage in the first half of pregnancy.  The cause of the miscarriage is the severe anemia that happens to the unborn baby.  The National Center for Infectious Diseases estimated these few cases to be about 5% of all B19-infected pregnant women.

If a pregnant woman has been known to be exposed to the B19 parvovirus, she should immediately inform her personal doctor about it.  Usually, the physician will perform blood tests in order to know the medical situation of the pregnant woman with regards to the B19 parvovirus infection.  The blood test will reveal one of the following:

·    The pregnant woman is already immune to the B19 parvovirus and her body is not suffering any infection - This means that she has nothing to worry about the presence of the virus.  Her immune system can easily handle the B19 parvovirus.

·    The pregnant woman had a recent infection, most probably within the last three months - This means that the pregnancy must be closely monitored.  There are no specific steps established to monitor a pregnant woman who recently had a B19 parvovirus infection, but the doctor can perform ultrasound examinations and more blood tests to make sure that the unborn baby is developing as he/she should be.

·    The pregnant woman has no B19 parvovirus infection but she has no immunity against it - This means that the woman must avoid exposure to the B19 parvovirus.  There is no vaccine yet against the B19 infection.

If the blood results revealed that the pregnant woman has no immunity against the B19 parvovirus infection, and she believes that she has been exposed to this virus, the doctor cannot provide medications to stop the infection.  All the doctor and the pregnant woman can do is to weather the infection, which could last for one to two weeks.  The unborn baby will be frequently examined for any signs of anemia.
